Love’s Song
For many summers now, my Love
You have skipped the Light fantastic with me
and in my soul’s winters,
You have sheltered my darkest sorrow
with the sweet balm of Your Grace
For so long now, my Love
You have made me a hallowed reed
and, have playfully surprised me
(again and again)
with what I could not have imagined
You have left me breathless, aching,
Calling Your name
And, in silence, I have heard You
pulsing softly against the warm breast
of the Mourning Dove
rocked in that rhythm
perched in those tender feathers
Hovering
Still
Singing
A Love song
For You

I remember the day I was meeting with my academic advisor to review progress on my dissertation. She was commenting on my poetic way of writing. I hesitated at bit and said, “Well, I probably shouldn’t tell you this but I’m really not so much an academic as I am a lover.” She paused a moment and said, “Perhaps God sends the lovers.” Thank you, Dr. Jenny Peace.
