Spiritual Mentoring, a form of pastoral counseling, offered by Rev. Dr. Stephanie Rutt, provides a blend of western behavioral science principles and eastern mysticism. Clients are asked to take an active role in the process and are often offered a variety of spiritual practices including breathing exercises, meditation and mantra practices, and journaling exercises to use in further exploration between sessions. Spiritual mentoring is different from traditional mental health counseling in that the client's psychological journey is seen as the doorway through which the spiritual journey may be realized. The goal is not treatment but rather enhanced awareness.
Although Rev. Dr. Rutt worked as a mental health counselor in the 1990s, today, as the creator of the Spiritual Mentoring Certificate Program now offered through the Tree of Life Interfaith Temple, she offers Spiritual Mentoring under the auspices of her position as an Interfaith Minister and Founding Minister of the Tree of Life Interfaith Temple.
